What is your success?

What is success:

Success is defined as:

  • n. The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted.

  • n. The gaining of fame or prosperity.

I like success - who doesn’t? I do, however, feel that it is just as important to have failures, as it is to have successes. Humans need the yin/yang, black/white, success/failure balance to truly appreciate the good things when they happen.

Racing in a triathlon is no different. To set myself up with a good outcome, I train. Sometimes I train harder and more seriously than other times. Sometimes I don’t train much at all. All of these factors contribute to the level of my success for that day.

I always give myself three goals for each event. My first goal is the simplest. FINISH. I must have this goal in my mind because we cannot control everything. Mother nature, other athletes, our health - these are all up for grabs on race mornings.

My second goal is my time goal based upon how I have trained for my event. I set that goal broken down by swim time, t1, bike time, t2 and run time. I give myself a small range of time that I HONESTLY feel I can hit. This is what I truly think I can achieve for that day. Built into that goal is always the underlying issue of things I cannot control and the acceptance that things may change rather quickly. I know I can control what and when I eat, my mechanical aspects pre race, and setting myself up with a good training plan. Everything else I throw to the universe and hope the planets have aligned just for me that day.

My third goal is my secret goal. The goal I tell no one and I dream about. I am sure it is similar to many aspiring triathletes - qualify for Kona. I know there will come a day that the universe says THIS IS IT!! IT IS YOUR DAY TO QUALIFY FOR KONA!! I just hope I am racing that day!!

Here’s to success!!

Wishing you all find your success in whatever form that may be.
